Why I still carry a film camera
I take most photographs on a digital camera, and for auroras or dark forests there is no real alternative. But on day walks I often carry an old Olympus with a single roll of thirty-six frames, and those pictures are usually the ones I end up printing.
With a limited roll I walk past a lot of things I would otherwise photograph without thinking. When I do stop, I stay longer, wait for a cloud to move, or walk twenty metres to find a better angle. The camera is simple enough that there is nothing to adjust apart from the exposure.
Developing
There is still a lab in Helsinki that develops colour film within a week. I scan at home with a digital camera and a light pad, which is slower than a lab scan but gives me more control over colour.
Cost
A roll and development together cost me around thirty euros now. That is a real limit, and I think it is part of why the photographs feel considered. I shoot maybe one roll a month in summer and almost none in winter, when the light is too short to bother.
